Finding the Right Stove

Things to consider when buying a stove...

There are a number of stove designs that will accommodate a number of applications and users. Some are very specific to an activity with features most of everyday camper’s will never use. Choose the model and type that is most suited for your use.

Size

Stove size should be dictated by the size of the group, distance and nature of travel. Smaller the stove less powerful and efficient it is. Small stoves are great for mountaineering and cycling trips, but can be a nuisance on a large family outing.

Fuel Type

In North America the most common liquid fuel is white gas. It burns very cleanly and efficiently. Still under no circumstance use a stove in a tent or confined space. It is very dangerous and all burned materials release some toxins.

If you plan to travel to foreign destinations, you’ll need to consider the type of fuel you will be able to source. There are stoves that will work with a variety of fuels; namely white gas, kerosene, isopro, superfuel, petrol and LP gas. Almost any combustible liquid can be used as fuel; however, not all stoves will burn all fuels. When choosing a stove consider a multifuel stove, if there is any chance you may travel outside of North America. They are usually more expensive than a single fuel stoves but well worth the extra money. You will not be able to bring fuel on the airplane, thus you will have to pack an empty fuel bottle and make sure it is clean - prepare to be asked to drink from it. And also fill it with something to replace that fuel, multifuel stoves simplify that exercise.

Cooking Features

Most stoves are used for boiling water, which is why one of the modes of measuring stove efficiency is the amount of time it takes to boil a litre of water. If you are car camping or setting up a basecamp then it is perfectly reasonable for you to have a multi-burner stove. If you want to gourmet cook at your campsite, then you must ensure that your stove has a simmer option on it. With no simmer option, you will be able to do little more than boil water as you will burn most foods.
